The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) offers Ontario secondary school students the opportunity to train as apprentices while completing their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). The program encourages students to consider career choices in the skilled trades, a sector which is experiencing rapid growth in employment and job satisfaction.

What is Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeship is a proven hands-on training program for people who enjoy "learning by doing" and who want to work in a skilled trade. About 90 per cent of apprenticeship training is provided in the workplace by employers. The remainder involves theoretical classroom instruction, which is usually given at a local community college, or provided through another approved training organization. A person taking apprenticeship training is called an apprentice.

Both employers and apprentices benefit from apprenticeship training. Employers support the development of a pool of skilled workers who help keep their business competitive. Apprentices receive training while they earn a wage. The length of time that is required to complete an apprenticeship varies from trade to trade. For more information about apprenticeships in Ontario please visit the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities website.
