STUDENT SUCCESS / LEARNING TO 18

The Student Success/Learning to 18 Strategy is a broad, province-wide strategy designed to ensure that all students successfully complete secondary school with the knowledge and skills required to pursue the work and learning opportunities available to them following secondary school graduation which include: (a) apprenticeship, (b) college, © employment, and (d) university.

Full time Student Success Teachers are in place in every secondary school in the York Region District School Board. They work closely with Student Success School Teams and with teachers across panels, grades and subject areas to ensure that all students have access to the learning opportunities and supports they need to be successful. This includes the implementation of board and school level transition plans to support students as they move from Grade 8 to high school and as they transition across grades.

Student Success enables students to discover and explore different pathways through exciting new learning opportunities such as Specialist High School Major (SHSM) programs, Dual Credits and expanded Cooperative Education programs.

Credit Recovery
Credit Recovery is an opportunity available in every secondary school to students who want to recover credits for courses in which they were previously unsuccessful. All Credit Recovery programs are based on current Ministry of Education approved courses.

Access to Credit Recovery must be through a recommendation by the principal and be agreed to by the student and parent. The Credit Recovery School Team will assist the principal in the placement of students recommended for the Credit Recovery program.

The final mark should reflect the achievement of all course expectations. The mark may be based solely on performance in the Credit Recovery program or may include results from the initial course and/or measures of prior learning. Regardless of the method used to determine the final mark, the evaluation practices must be consistent with Ministry and Board policy. Please see your principal for details about the program in your school.
