Curriculum and Co-Curricular Activities
As with each school in the York Region District School Board, Coledale P.S. support student learning through the curriculum standards set out by the Ontario Ministry of Education and many other co-curricular activities.
A focus on literacy: Literacy is woven into the curriculum and supports for classrooms. These include: author visits, ongoing workshops, a professional learning community, curriculum nights and the purchase of books for the Primary and Junior bookrooms, for the leveled book carts and the classroom.
A focus on student leadership: Opportunities for student leadership include: lunch monitors for primary classes; organizing and running the milk program; tidying and organizing the gym equipment room, office helpers, and tech team. Intermediate students participate in a Student Council. Some students are student leaders on the Markham Mayor's Youth Task Force.
Parents as partners: Parent volunteers are in classrooms, the library, and the office. Through school council support we have been able to provide additional classroom materials, computers, science equipment, gym equipment, books, author visits, and musical instruments. Workshops are regularly offered to parents regarding curriculum issues, York Region initiatives such as Literacy Focus and use of technology in schools are topics for parent presentations. Authors Bob Barton and Larry Swartz will be meeting with parents to discuss how they may support student achievement at home.
Creating a positive school climate: We encourage our students to reach their potential academically, socially and emotionally, and recognize their efforts and achievements through announcements, newsletters, and in assemblies.
Focus on Arts and Athletics: We have many school teams (cross country, volleyball, basketball...), both intramural and interschool. We had over 80 students participate in the Canadian Indoor Rowing Championships in Toronto and had 2 gold medal winners. Our students achieved second place in the Arts competition at the Markham Fair, and enjoy in school and off site arts activities. We have a band and choir programs. Coledale was recognized as one of the Top 40 Schools in Canada in Today's Parent magazine. Over 600 schools were nominated for recognition. Coledale was highlighted as a school with extraordinary extracurricular programs.

Safe and Supportive Schools/Character Education/Equity Education
In addition, Coledale P.S. supports the development of character education in an anti-racist, anti-bullying learning environment in the York Region District School Board. We value the three ‘Rs", respectful, responsible and reasonable behaviour and use it as the basis of our expectations with students.
