Tutors in the Classroom 2009 - 2010

We once again are seeking students currently attending a university or college to work with teachers and young people in our schools as part of a "Tutors in the Classroom" initiative. Successful tutors will work with teachers and students providing assistance in literacy and numeracy K - 6. The program is jointly funded by the York Region District School Board and the Ministry of Education.

As a tutor you will support the work of the teacher through activities such as tutoring in the classroom, introducing students to new technologies, assisting with special projects and updating materials for teachers. The program will provide you with an opportunity to enhance your educational experience by applying your academic learning in a practical environment. It will allow you to explore your suitability for a career in teaching or working with young people and be a positive addition to your resume.

The program runs from October 2009 to the end of June 2010 and offers a flexible schedule that fits you and the schools involved. Some positions are filled after students return home from college or university in the spring.

As a tutor you will earn $10.00 per hour up to a maximum of $2000 (200 hours).

To be qualified as a tutor you must be currently enrolled in and attending a college or university, be able to obtain a Statement of Good Health and a Vulnerable Sector Screening Report.

Please be advised that we are experiencing issues with inbound email from Hotmail and Sympatico to the Board’s email systems. Senders using these accounts will eventually receive a rejection notice from their system indicating trouble sending the email. We are working on resolving this issue in conjunction with our vendor partners.

Interested and qualified students are invited to send an application to the program by submitting it by fax, mail or email (for those not using Hotmail or Sympatico accounts) as stated in the application.

Applications are due by November 13, 2009 or earlier. Later applications are welcome; however, some positions may be filled.
