| How do I apply for teaching positions? You are required to submit an on-line application at no charge to you. Applications may be found on our website under careers, and then opportunities at our board and under the Teaching category; Elementary and/or Secondary Teachers. The York Region District School Board does not accept paper applications, fax transmissions or e-mailed applications. Applications e-mailed, faxed or given directly to Hiring Managers will not be accepted nor acknowledged. Is there a deadline for applying? We do not have a deadline; however, our external hiring begins April/May. We encourage candidates to have their applications in by the end of February or shortly thereafter. Do I have to submit separate applications for elementary and secondary and for different subjects? Yes. Separate applications are required for each division/subject you are interested in and qualified to teach. Should I still apply even if I do not have all the required documentation? Yes, you can still apply. To whom should I address my cover letter? Cover letters should be addressed to Hiring Committee, Human Resource Services, York Region District School Board. How do I make my application stand out? We receive a very high volume of applications so it is important that you try to set yourself apart from all the other candidates. Try to include relevant information in your application that substantiates your teaching experience (eg. letters of reference, practice teaching reports, transcripts, résumés and evaluations). One of the questions in the application asks me to list my highest level of completion in the above area(s) (with respect to teachables). What does this mean? You may add double major, undergraduate, honours, etc. My teachable is Individual in Society. Which application should I submit? If your courses of study were in the areas of parenting, family studies, fashion, food and nutrition, then you would apply to the category of Family Studies. If your courses of study were in the areas of challenge and change in society, anthropology, psychology, sociology, philosophy, or world religions, then you would apply to the category of Social Sciences and Humanities. My teachable is Law. Which application should I submit? You will be applying under the category of History. How many references do I need? You are required to submit the names of 3 professional business references including their current address, telephone number, e-mail address and position title. Also, please ensure that one of your references is your most current employer, if applicable. My résumé doesn’t look good when I copy and paste it. Did you receive it okay? Your résumé may look different to you but it formats properly when received by us. The on-line application has an option of including attachments, allowing applicants the choice of also including a formatted version of their résumé. Do I still need to copy and paste my résumé and cover letter if I have attached them? Yes. It is still necessary to copy and paste your résumé and cover letter into the appropriate fields in the application for search purposes. The data in these fields is searchable data, whereas the information provided in the attachments is not included as searchable data. What does the “SKILLS” section on the application mean? The “SKILLS” section is the area for you to tell us about your additional skills or qualifications that may not have been identified in the application’s screening questions. It also gives you the ability to rate yourself on those skills/qualifications. What two attachments should I include as part of my online application? Applicants may include any documents you feel would be relevant to your application or the position you are applying for. Common attachments include formatted versions of the cover letter and résumé, and reference letters. Only files with the following extensions are accepted and accessible by the York Region District School Board: jpg, rtf, doc, gif, jpeg, pdf, txt, zip, wpd, wpe. How do I add/delete attachments? You first need to request a link to access your application, and then when you open up the link, you will be on page 1 of your application. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and type in a reason for updating your application, click update and you will be directed to the next page where you may add/delete attachments as needed. I submitted my application, how do I know if it went through? When you submit your application, an acknowledgement message will be sent to your e-mail account indicating that we have received your application. I’ve applied on-line, so now what happens? Your on-line application will be stored in our database throughout the hiring season and all of our principals and vice-principals have access to all applications. Because of the high number of applications received for most positions, school administrators will determine which candidates will be offered an interview for opportunities available at their school location. While we appreciate all applications received, only those to be interviewed will be contacted. How do I submit my practice teaching reports? If you wish, you can upload your practice teaching reports into your application. Otherwise, when you are granted an interview, you may bring them along to the interview. Should I send in hard copies? No. We do not accept hard copies of any documentation sent via fax/e-mail/mail as you must submit an online application. Please note that copies of letters of reference, transcripts, diplomas, résumés and evaluations may be provided at the time of interview or provided as attachments in the online application. Does the YRDSB require applicants to have a portfolio and if so what is required to be included in the portfolio? No. We do not require a portfolio; however, it may be beneficial for you to bring it with you when you attend an interview. When does hiring commence? External vacancies within our Board won't be known until our internal staff transfer process has been completed and closed. School administrators will then be prepared to interview applicants to fill any remaining vacancies. As a result of York Region's internal transfer processes, new teacher hiring does not usually commence until late Spring and continues right through to September; however, your application will be active for the current school year and if the need arises, you may be contacted during the year for an interview. Will teacher vacancies be posted on your website? As teacher hiring at the York Region District School Board is site-based, we do not post our vacancies externally. School Administrators conduct targeted searches using the candidate database and manage their own interview and selection process in response to their hiring needs. How do I get an interview? If you are invited to attend an interview, you will be contacted via e-mail or telephone to coordinate your interview. All applications will be screened based on the required education, experience and qualifications as noted in the posting and/or job description as reflected in the application. Only those candidates meeting these criteria will be eligible to participate in the selection process and only qualified candidates will be contacted. I had an interview; will the interview results be posted anywhere? Once a candidate has been interviewed, the interview results are posted on our internal applicant database and are visible to all York Region District School Board Principal/Vice Principals that have access to the internal applicant database. I had an interview with a Principal last year; will my results be attached to my new application? No. We do not carry over interview results from year to year. Every year is considered a new hiring year. Does the Board conduct interviews for candidates to be "pool hired"? No. The York Region District School Board does not “pool hire”. School administrators manage their individual hiring needs and have the ability to screen and contact candidates directly for interviews. From time to time, the Board may interview and pool hire a small number of teachers for highly specialized subject areas, i.e. Elementary French Immersion. Is it true that in order to be hired by YRDSB candidates need to get their name on the “highly recommended” or “preferred candidate” list? No, this is false. The York Region District School Board does not maintain a “highly recommended” or “preferred candidate” list. Is it true that the York Region District School Board is not hiring. The York Region District School Board is considered one of the growing boards in the province. Currently, we are experiencing slower student enrolment growth than in previous years, and as a result, our external teacher hiring will be impacted and there may be limited vacancies for the coming school year. Is it true that you need to have completed your practice teaching in York Region in order to be considered eligible for hire? No, this is false. The York Region District School Board is open to considering all applicants and considers candidates that most closely meet a school's hiring need. Is it true that the York Region District School Board only recognized candidates with additional qualifications or Special Education qualifications? No, this is false. Teacher hiring is conducted by our school administrators and is site specific. That means that the school administrator will assess the hiring needs for his/her school and then search for candidates that most closely meet those needs. Naturally, if the vacancy is for a Special Education teacher, then that will be one of the criterions. Is it true that you must be TRIBES trained in order to be considered eligible for hire by the York Region District School Board? No, this is false. Although a number of York Region schools offer the TRIBES program to their students, being TRIBES trained is not mandatory criterion for eligibility to teach at our Board. What is the status of my application? Your application will remain active throughout the hiring season. Only those candidates who are selected to move forward in the process will be contacted via e-mail. You will be informed electronically when a new application is required. What documents are required by the York Region District School Board? As a condition of and prior to commencing employment, successful candidates will be required to provide a vulnerable sector screening obtained within the last six months, and a satisfactory medical examination report obtained within the last twelve months. Dependent on the position you are being considered for you may/will be asked to supply your teaching evaluations and/or practice teaching reports and/or proof of education. Information regarding Related Experience Elementary Related experience requests must be made at the time of hire. Work experience must be after their basic degree. Work experience must be relevant to teaching. They receive 1 year of teaching experience for every 2 years of work experience. MAXIMUM CREDIT IS 4 YEARS. Secondary Related experience requests must be made at the time of hire ONLY. Work experience must be related to the subject they will be teaching.
