The York Region District School Board invites parents of students attending schools in the Central (1 elementary parent), East (1 secondary parent), West (1 secondary parent) and North (1 secondary parent) areas to apply for a position on the Parent, Family and Community Engagement Advisory Committee, which will commence this year’s work in the fall of 2011. There are several positions available, due to the expiry of the terms held by previous committee members. The Parent, Family and Community Engagement Advisory Committee is responsible for providing advice regarding strategies to support and strengthen the engagement of all parents, families and communities in support of student learning. It will meet approximately six times each school year, to review the Board’s Improvement Plan as it relates to parent, family and community engagement, to advise the Ministry of Education on policies as requested, and to make suggestions to schools, School Councils and the Board regarding parent engagement that supports student achievement. The Committee is established according to Ministry legislation, and members must be prepared to attend each meeting. This year’s meetings are scheduled for November 1, 2011, January 17, 2012, February 15, 2012, April 10, 2012, May 8, 2012 and September 2012 (date to be finalized).
The committee is composed of 12 parents, the Director of Education, 1 trustee, 2 principals/vice-principals, 1 Superintendent, 1 Special Education Advisory Committee member, and 1 community representative. The selection Committee has decided on principles of representation that include a variety of skills, experiences, location, and knowledge. Two references will be required, one of which should be a school staff member (eg. Teacher, Education Assistant, principal).
