Parents have the right to remove their child from school and teach them at home. The Ministry of Education has provided guidelines that parents and school boards should follow. The guidelines, Policy Program Memorandum 131 (PPM 131) outlines the rules of home schooling for all students in Ontario. York Region District School Board also provides a guide called Homeschooling Guide for Parents .
According to PPM 131, if parents decide to home school their children, then they must also decide which lessons, schedule and materials that they will use to teach their child. Home schooled children are taught in different ways. Some parents use text books while some use the internet for programs. Schools are not required to provide any materials, such as text books, lesson plans or other work to students who are being home schooled.
Once a parent decides to home school their child, they need to send a letter to their child’s school to notify them of their intent to home school prior to the beginning of the school year. Parents may write their own letter or use a copy of the Notification of Intent to Home school. If the child has never been registered in a York Region District School Board school, then this letter may be forwarded to:
Administrative Support to School Social Work and Attendance Services
300 Harry Walker Pkwy South
Newmarket, Ontario L3Y 8E2
Once the letter from the parents is received, a letter is sent out on behalf of the school board to acknowledge that the parents are home schooling their child.
York Region District School Board allows for children to attend part time school and still be home schooled part time. To do so, parents must send a letter to the principal of the school to make this request. It is the principal’s decision as to whether this will be allowed. Home schooled students are allowed to participate in the EQAO testing that takes place in the school. To do so, the parent must make the request of the principal at the beginning of the school year.
