Should I send my child to school on January 11, 2013?
Schools are open on Friday, January 11, 2013. Attendance will be taken but not counted against students whose families made alternate arrangements for the day.
Why wasn’t more notice provided?
The Ontario Labour Relations Board decision was communicated at 4 a.m. We communicated via Twitter and our website as soon as possible following the decision.
Will the January 18th elementary PA Day be cancelled?
Designated Professional Activity (PA) Days are approved by the Ministry a year in advance. School staff use PA Days for important work, including completing report cards and professional development. These dates are also aligned with the Separate school system to coordinate our shared bus transportation. In addition, many families plan in advance for PA Days using YRDSB’s school year calendar. Due of these factors, it is not possible to change or cancel a PA Day.
Where can I find more information about labour sanctions and how this will affect students?
YRDSB will continue to communicate to parents any sanctions that may affect students and educational programming. We are committed to minimizing the impact of the labour disruption on student programs. You may also follow our Twitter account @yrdsb for more immediate updates.
Will buses be cancelled?
All elementary buses will be cancelled on January 11, 2013.
Why are teachers taking job action?
Teacher contracts expired August 31, 2012. The provincial government’s Bill 115: Putting Students First Act was passed by the Ontario legislature on Sept. 11, 2012. The Act dictates the terms and processes for labour negotiations in Ontario’s schools. Teacher unions have expressed concerns with Bill 115. YRDSB remains committed to negotiating with its employee groups, including teachers, with an aim toward improving student achievement and well-being.
Why are teachers withdrawing from extra-curricular activities?
Teachers participate in extra-curricular activities on a voluntary basis at all times. Teachers may choose whether or not to volunteer for these activities.
