COURSE SELECTION PROCEDURE FOR 2009- 2010

Please see the “Information” Section on the main menu bar for additional information concerning Newmarket High School. Newmarket High School has 3 regional programs for the north area: Gifted & Enrichment Program (identified gifted centre since 1984), High Performance Athlete Program, and French Immersion Program (started in September 2007). Advanced Placement courses are also offered (See “Gifted & Enrichment Program” information).

The courses offered at Newmarket High School for the 2009-2010 school year are listed below. The list includes: course codes, course names, destinations, Ministry descriptions, prerequisites, recommended backgrounds (if applicable), and fees for materials, uniforms, course packs etc.

Subject area flow charts which show the progression, by subject, from one grade to another can be viewed in the "Charts" section on the main menu bar. Students should refer to the York Region District School Board “Regional Course Directory” (see Regional Directory on the main menu bar or www.yrdsb.edu.on.ca) for general information concerning the Ontario Secondary School curriculum and specific information on the programs and courses available in York Region schools. The courses offered have been developed according to the Ministry of Education guidelines. These guidelines can be accessed at the Ministry website www.edu.gov.on.ca.

Courses at Newmarket High School will be scheduled based on the number of students who request them. Only courses that generate sufficient enrollment during the course request process will be scheduled. Therefore, it is very important that students make careful, wise choices during the course selection process to ensure availability. Students should continue to update their Education Planning Charts to assist with their decisions. By referring to their Credit Counselling Summaries and using the Education Planning Charts, students can select courses to meet graduation requirements and achieve their educational goals. Information on “Planning Program Pathways” at Newmarket High School is available in the “Information” Section on the main menu bar under NHS Calendar (hard copy).
